Shell GameChanger Challenge 2019 | China CALL FOR HYDROGEN DELIVERY AND DISPENSING SOLUTIONS 1 SHELL GAMECHANGER CALL FOR SOLUTIONS Energy Transition Call for Hydrogen Delivery and Dispensing Solutions CONTEXT An accelerated growth of fuel cell electric vehicle fleets is anticipated in the coming decades. Safe and costeffective solutions which deliver hydrogen to refuelling stations and dispense it into vehicles is becoming increasingly important. This is widely regarded as a prerequisite of the industrial scale deployment of hydrogen as a fuel option for the transportation sector. Due to its relatively low volumetric energy density, storage and delivery to the point of use can create a significant inefficiency in the hydrogen value chain. The various delivery options available today typically require substantial investment on specific infrastructure or have high operating costs with substantial energy input. This challenge requires a multidisciplinary approach of solutions that rely on and/or are integrated with proven technology. Hydrogen Fuelling Station, Hamburg, Germany WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR We seek safe, reliable and cost-competitive technologies to de-bottleneck today’s challenging safety, cost and reliability issues that limited commercially viable delivery of hydrogen from the point of production to the point of use, as well as dispensing into Fuel Cell Electrical Vehicles. IN SCOPE We seek proposals on early stage technologies (TRL 2-5) that include: ▪ Breakthrough technologies that significantly reduce capital cost of hydrogen liquefaction (>60% reduction) in comparison to current solutions available in market. ▪ On board direct use of Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) under ambient pressure. ▪ Disruptive solutions to meet economic viability of deploying pipelines for substantial and stable hydrogen delivery and make it easier to permit/install and reduce surface disruptions. ▪ Innovative technology for high flow compressor to meet the reliability, capacity and cost requirement of refuelling hydrogen for heavy duty fleets. SHELL GAMECHANGER CALL FOR SOLUTIONS OUT OF SCOPE ▪ Technologies focusing on improving energy efficiency of hydrogen liquefaction. ▪ LOHC or other low-pressure solution to deliver hydrogen to stationary on-site storage. ▪ Gas detection solution. ▪ Incremental cost improvement in manufacturing based on proven compressor technology. Selected proposals will progress a “proof of concept” in a phased approach over a period of 24 months. The funding level will be decided for selected proposals and further development may be supported and/or facilitated by Shell.
