LEAF Business English Program 2023 Course Syllabus Course Outline Using a variety of communicative English teaching techniques, Laurier instructors will help students improve their English-language communication skills using a focus on business themes, vocabulary, and current events. The courses are academic in nature and in addition to improving students’ English language skills, they will expand students’ international and intercultural understanding and introduce students to the Canadian cultural context. Learning Objectives During the program, students will… • • • • • • Take effective notes and summarize readings and lessons Reflect on language and cultural learning Learn, practice, and their English communication skills, including listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar Contribute to group discussions Deliver an effective business ‘pitch’ presentation Enhance their understanding of leadership, marketing, entrepreneurship, and business communications with a focus on succeeding in English Grade Breakdown Attendance and Participation Listening Speaking Reading Writing Total 20% 20% 20% 20% 20% 100% Attendance and Participation 20% • Attendance will be assessed based on how many classes each student attends • Participation will be assessed based on: o Completion of assignments, activities, and homework o Involvement in and attentiveness to group discussions, lessons, and presentations o Attentiveness and involvement in ‘Business Engagement’ trips Listening, Speaking, Reading, & Writing 20% each • As part of their classes, students will be expected to apply their learning through in-class activities, quizzes, homework assignments, and reflections o Speaking: Students will finish the course by delivering a ‘Product Pitch’ presentation with a partner and will be evaluated on their Speaking skills throughout the courses. o Listening: Students will be expected to listen actively to their classmates’ presentations and preparation and to respond with appropriate questions and comments. They will also be expected to interact with entrepreneurs and business owners during ‘Business Engagement’ trips. o Reading: Students will regularly be assigned homework to practice and improve their reading skills, and will be asked questions (both verbal and written) to evaluate their understanding of the readings. o Writing: Students will be asked to write a series of reflections on their learning and on their experiences. Students will also be tested on various points of language and grammar learned throughout the course.
