2022 Enrollment Guide on Postgraduate Program in Chinese for International Students of Renmin University of China Renmin University of China is a research-oriented comprehensive university focusing on humanities and social sciences. In December 2017, the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Finance and National Development and Reform Commission collectively released the national list of world-class university and first-class discipline construction. RUC was selected as type A university and has 14 disciplines selected, including philosophy, theoretical economics, applied economics, law, politics, sociology, Marxist theory, journalism and communication, Chinese history, statistics, business administration, agricultural and forestry economics and management, public administration, library information and archives management, etc. In 2022, there are 66 Ph.D. majors and 93 master majors (all instructed in Chinese) accepting international students. Detailed information could be found on the Major List. I. Application Qualifications The applicant should hold a valid ordinary passport and shall not have Chinese nationality1. S/he shall be physically and mentally healthy, have a required degree and Chinese language proficiency. 1. For master degree program applicants: S/he shall not be older than 35 years old in principle, and shall have acquired a degree equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in China. 2. For Ph.D. applicants: S/he shall not be older than 45 years old in principle, and shall have acquired a degree equivalent to a China’s master’s degree in China. II. Application Time November 15, 2021 to April 30, 2022 Please note: International Students Office (ISO) of RUC will review the According to the Nationality Law of the People’s Republic of China and the Letter No.12 [2020] of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, applicants shall provide additional materials as required in Entry 11, 1 1 application materials during the application period. Applicants who do not pass the online preliminary review shall resubmit the application materials before the deadline. No application will be accepted after the deadline. III. Majors, Duration and Tuition Fees Basic study duration of master degree students varies between 2 and 3 years. Basic study duration of Ph.D. students is 4 years. For majors and their durations and tuition fees, please refer to the Major List of Master Degree Program and Ph.D. Program. IV. Application Procedure 1. Online Application The online application starts on November 15, 2021, and ends on April 30, 2022. Applicants must log in to the International Students Application System of Renmin University of China (http://international.ruc.edu.cn/application) within the application time, fill in the application information authentically, upload the application materials and pay the application fee online in the system. After the payment of the application fee, the system will automatically generate the Application Form for International Students of Renmin University of China. Applicants should print the application form and sign it. Notes: (1) Requirements for the electronic photo submitted for online application: a) Taken recently, plain white background, two-inch; b) Full face exposed, ears exposed, taken with no hat or other head coverings unless it is required by the applicant’s religious belief; c) Taken in dark-colored clothes; d) The head of the applicant shall account for 2/3 of the whole photo; e) In JPG or JPEG format. (2) The registration information must be verified before submitting. Once submitted, it cannot be modified. (3) Be sure to keep the username and password used in online registration. (4) The application fee is RMB 800 yuan (non-refundable). Please pay the application fee online in the system. (5) Late applications will not be accepted. Part V. 2 2. Mail the Hard Copies of Application Documents After the online application, RUC will review the applicants’ information and materials. Applicants who pass the online preliminary review should mail the hard copies of the application materials to the International Students Office of RUC through EMS or SF-Express within one week after passing the online preliminary review. Application Form for International Students of Renmin University of China (Original) After online application, the system will automatically generate the application form. Please print the form clearly on one piece of A4 paper and sign it. Smeared, doodled or damaged forms are not acceptable. Final Education Certificate (1) Applicants who have graduated should submit the copy of final education certificate, with the original copy of the notarization of the final education certificate or the original copy of verification of the final education certificate by the Ministry of Education of China, the Ministry of Education of the applicant’s country, the applicant’s embassy in China, Chinese embassy in the applicant’s country or other institutions entrusted by the Ministries and Embassies mentioned above; (2) If the applicant is currently a student at school, please submit the original or notarized copy of the certificate of expected graduation issued by his or her current university. The applicant shall apply for verification as required above in requirement (1) after they get the diploma to ensure their registration in September; Transcript (Original or Notarized Copy) The transcript must include all the courses of the final education period. If the full score of the course is not 100, please provide the guide to transcript. Copies of the First Page and Visa Page of the Passport The applicant must hold an ordinary passport. Other types of ID documents2 are not allowed for application. The expiry date of the passport must be later than March 31, 2023. Please do not change the passport after the online preliminary review. Recommendation Letters Two recommendation letters are required, from two professors or associate professors. The recommender shall sign at the bottom of the letter. Personal Statement and Study Plan The personal statement shall be written in Chinese, and shall include personal study and work experience, academic research achievements, research plans, career planning after graduation, etc. Master degree program applicant’s personal statement shall be 1000 Chinese characters long at least. Ph.D. applicant’s personal statement shall be 1500 Chinese characters long at least. Foreigner Physical Examination Form (Original) The template of Foreigner Physical Examination Form can be downloaded on the website of International Students Office. The applicant should go to the local regular hospital for physical examination in strict accordance with the items specified in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. A physical examination form missing items, photo, cross-page seal, signature of the doctor, or the seal of the hospital is considered invalid. If you could not provide the document due to the Covid-19 pandemic, please contact the university and explain your situations solely. HSK and HSKK Report (Original) An HSK Level 6 report is required. The total score shall be no lower than 180 points, with each sub-category no lower than 60 points. In addition, an HSKK (Advanced level) report with the score no lower than 60 points is required. The reports shall be sent out by Chinese Testing International Co., Ltd. to RUC directly.3 Reports sent by the applicants will not be accepted. The reports are valid for 2 years. Expired reports are considered invalid. For (a) master degree program applicants who have acquired a bachelor’s degree or one superior with the instruction language being Chinese at a university located in China, and (b) Ph.D. applicants who have acquired a master’s degree or one superior with the instruction language being Chinese at a university located in China, they can submit the original copy of the certificate of instruction language issued by the university, and do not need to submit the HSK and HSKK report. The applicant can apply for the service on www.chinesetest.cn. 4 9. Letter of Guarantee (Original) Proof of Economic Status of the Guarantor The template of the Letter of Guarantee can be downloaded from the website of the International Students Office. The guarantor can choose one of the following as their proof of economic status: employment certificate (annual income specified), bank deposit certificate, or other proof of economic status. The bank deposit shall be a time deposit of no less than RMB 30,000 yuan and the maturity date should be after October 2022. 10. Certificate of Non-Criminal Record (Original or Notarized Copy) (1) Applicants who are currently not in Chinese mainland should offer the certificate issued by the local public security department; (2) Applicants who are currently in Chinese mainland should offer the certificate issued by entry and exit administration departments of China. 11. Nationality Proof According to the Nationality Law of the People’s Republic of China and the Letter No.12 [2020] of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, some applicants shall provide additional materials as required. (1) Applicants having acquired foreign nationality at birth with their parent(s) being Chinese citizen(s) at that time should submit: a) Proof of acquisition of foreign nationality at birth (notarized copy); b) Copies of applicant’s parents’ identity documents at their birth; c) Copies of applicant’s parents’ current identity documents. Besides, other materials are required under the following circumstances: a) An applicant who was born overseas, and (i) whose parents were Chinese citizens having settled abroad when the applicant was born, or (ii) one of whose parents is a Chinese citizen having settled abroad when the applicant was born, the other being a foreigner at that time, should submit the copies of proof documents of settling abroad of the parent(s) who was/were Chinese (e.g., visas, exit and entry seals, permanent residence of foreign countries, etc.); b) According to the Nationality Law of the People’s Republic of China, an applicant is considered to have Chinese nationality if s/he were born overseas with one or both of their parents being Chinese citizen(s) and having long settled in Chinese Mainland when the applicant was born. Such applicants should submit the notarized copy of renunciation of Chinese nationality; 5 c) An applicant who was born in Chinese Mainland, one or both of their parents being Chinese citizen(s) and having long settled in Chinese Mainland when the applicant was born should submit: i. Notarized copy of certificate of renunciation of Chinese nationality, if the applicant has settled in Chinese Mainland since birth, meaning that s/he has Chinese nationality; ii. Proof documents of settling abroad right after their birth, if the applicant has settled abroad since birth, meaning that s/he does not have Chinese nationality. (2) Applicants who were Chinese citizens (including those who resided in Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan) before immigrating to a foreign country and obtaining foreign nationality should submit: a) Foreign nationality certificate obtained before April 30th , 2018 (notarized copy); b) In addition, applicants who were residents of and have settled in Chinese Mainland and have acquired foreign nationality should submit the certificate of renunciation of Chinese nationality and that of canceling the household registration (hukou) (notarized copies); c) Applicants who were residents of Chinese Mainland and have acquired foreign nationality after settling abroad should submit the notarized copy of canceling the household registration (hukou) and copy of certificate of settling abroad. 12. Others Copies of published academic papers, awards or other research results may be attached if necessary. The published academic papers shall be attached with a retrieval certificate, certificate of publication or other relevant publication proof materials. Matters needing attention:  All application materials shall be in Chinese / English, and notarized Chinese / English translation shall be provided for texts not in Chinese / English. Documents in other languages are not accepted. If the published academic paper is too long to provide translation, Chinese / English research certificate, certificate of publication or other relevant publication proof materials shall be provided, and the original paper shall be attached; 6  If the submitted materials are notarized copies, they shall be the original notarized copies. Copies of notarizations are not accepted;  All application materials will not be returned once submitted;  Renmin University of China reserves the right to require the applicant to submit relevant supporting materials. VI. Review and Enrollment Procedure Applicants can apply for 2 majors at the same time. The International Students Office (ISO) will review the application materials. After the preliminary review, ISO will send the application materials to the school offering the first major that the applicant applies for. The school will review the application materials again and notify the qualified applicants of participating a test or an interview. If the applicant’s materials do not pass the review of the first school, or the applicant fails to pass the test or interview of the first school, his or her application materials will go through the same procedure to the second school. If the applicant fails to pass the review / test / interview of both the majors, the application procedure will automatically end and the applicant cannot be admitted. After reviewing application materials and organizing the test / interview, the school will form a proposed admission list based on the applicant’s overall performance and research capacity. The proposed admission list will be submitted to the Admission Office of the Graduate School along with the record sheet of the interview and all the application materials. The Admission Committee of Renmin University will deliberate and finalize the admission list, after which the International Students Office will issue the admission results and send the admission notices. The admission notice is scheduled to be issued in July, 2022. VII. Scholarship Application 1. Chinese Government Scholarship Type A: Bilateral Program The applicant should first apply to the dispatching authorities for overseas study of his or her home country, such as Chinese embassies and consulates abroad or other organizations. The dispatching authorities will send the application information to the university to decide whether the application can be approved. For more information, please refer to the website: http://www.campuschina.org/. 7 Type B: Chinese University Program The applicant should apply for this scholarship to the university when applying for the master or Ph.D. program. After receiving and reviewing the application, the university will submit relevant materials to the Chinese Scholarship Council. The final list will be issued by the Chinese Scholarship Council. International Chinese Language Teacher Scholarship (ICLTS) Confucius China Studies Program (CCSP) The application and examination is organized by Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC). Applicants passing the review of CLEC will be recommended to the university to review. If the applicant passes the review and interview organized by the university, the university will send the proposed admission notice to CLEC. The final admission result shall be subject to that revealed by CLEC. For more information about ICLTS, please refer to the website: http://cis.chinese.cn/. RUC International Students Outstanding Award Applicants shall apply to the university during their application for self-supported study. The university will form the final list according to the relative regulations after receiving the application documents, and International Students Office will release the final list. 4. Beijing Municipal Government New Foreign Students Scholarship Applicants shall apply to the university during their application for self-supported study. The university will form the final list according to the relative regulations after receiving the application documents, and International Students Office will release the final list. The scholarship will be given as a full or half waiver of the tuition fee of their first year study in RUC. VIII.
