24 May 2015 Professor Chunli Bai President Chinese Academy of Sciences 52 Sanlihe Road Xicheng District BEIJING CHINA Dear Professor Bai: 60th Anniversary of CAS Membership On behalf of the International Council for Science, I am pleased to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Chinese Academy of Sciences as it celebrates the 60th Anniversary of CAS Membership in 2015. Over my now 50 years of involvement in global environmental and related sciences, I have personally seen the great contributions of the Chinese scientific community within the Chinese Academy of Sciences leading to very positive benefits. My first meeting in 1984 as a member of the Joint Scientific Committee of the World Climate Research Programme has hosted by CAS in Hangzhou, where I met my long-time colleague Professor Duzheng Ye. He was one of outstanding examples of CAS scientists and leaders who made major differences for global science and programs. The International Council for Science has highly valued the participation of CAS and its outstanding scientists within our science programs and our committees and other activities, such as the WCRP, IGBP, IRDR and most recently Urban Health and Well Being and as active and greatly contributing to our Executive Board. I wish to congratulate the Academicians of CAS for their very important contributions to science and global programs that they have made over the past 60 years and look forward to high achievements and continued partnership with the International Council for Science in the future.
